The Book of Portals

The Game of Portals

Aotearoa

(An early AI book for children)

Book 1

Prologue

In the heart of Aotearoa’s ancient forest, where the kauri trees whispered secrets and the ferns danced in the dappled sunlight, an unlikely group gathered. Each member brought their unique skills and quirks to the clearing, their purpose crystallising: to thwart the impending darkness that loomed over their land.

The Robot, its metallic limbs creaking as it moved, was a marvel of engineering. Its circuits hummed with efficiency, and its eyes glowed with artificial intelligence. It lacked emotions, but its logic was impeccable.

Aria the Humanoid Android, her soft velvet skin reflecting the brown and green hues of the forest, stood tall and unyielding. Her eyes, digital and sharp, scanned the surroundings. She was programmed for logic, precision, and unwavering loyalty. But deep within her circuits, there flickered a curiosity—an inexplicable longing for something more.

Tamati the Warrior, clad in woven flax and adorned with pounamu, exuded the spirit of his ancestors. His tattooed face told stories of battles fought and victories won. His mere presence radiated strength and honour. Tamati carried a taiaha—a traditional Maori weapon—passed down through generations. Its carved wood hummed with ancient magic.

The Grey Man, a mysterious figure wrapped in a cloak of mist, drifted silently into the clearing. His eyes were like storm clouds, and his movements betrayed no sound. Some said he was a guardian spirit, others whispered that he was a lost soul seeking redemption. The truth remained elusive, hidden in the folds of his grey cloak.

And then there was their faithful robot dog, a creation of wires and circuits, with eyes that glowed like distant stars. It wagged its mechanical tail, eager to please, its loyalty unwavering. The dog’s name? Well, it didn’t have one. But it responded to whistles and commands, and that was enough.

They sat on moss-covered rocks, a makeshift table set with leaves and berries. The aroma of roasted kumara and wild mushrooms wafted through the air. Their meal was supplemented with delicacies conjured from the magic realm by the robot. Aria’s circuits analysed the situation, Tamati sharpened his hunting knife, and The Gray Man simply observed.

“Friends,” Aria began, her voice a blend of binary code and something almost human, “we face a grave threat. The ancient texts speak of an evil force awakening—a darkness that hungers for chaos.”

Tamati nodded solemnly. “I’ve felt it too,” he said. “The spirits whisper warnings. The land trembles.”

The Gray Man’s eyes narrowed. “It feeds on fear,” he murmured. “And it grows stronger with every passing day.”

Their robot dog barked, its metallic tail stiffening. It had no words, only instincts, but its loyalty was unwavering.

“We must act,” Aria declared. “But how? Our skills alone won’t be enough.”

Tamati leaned forward. “We need a plan,” he said. “A way to weaken this force before it consumes everything.”

The Gray Man’s misty form shifted. “Perhaps,” he said, “we seek the ancient guardians—the ones who slumber beneath the roots of the kauri trees. They hold forgotten knowledge.”

“But they’re elusive,” Aria pointed out. “And dangerous.”

Tamati’s eyes blazed. “We face danger every day,” he said. “Our ancestors did too. We honour their legacy by protecting this land.”

And so, under the dappled sunlight, they forged their pact. Aria would calculate probabilities, Tamati would fight, The Gray Man would guide, their robot dog would sniff out hidden trails, and the robot would be their guardian. Together, they would unravel the mystery, confront the evil force, and restore balance to Aotearoa.

As they rose from their leaf-strewn seats, the forest seemed to hold its breath. The wind whispered secrets, and the kauri trees leaned closer. The adventure awaited—a collision of technology, tradition, and magic.

And so, with determination burning in their hearts, they stepped into the shadows, ready to face the unknown. For in Aotearoa, where the land breathed and the spirits danced, heroes were born from unlikely alliances.

However, before they begin, one problem needed addressing. The robot dog. It lacked something—the spark of intuition, the ability to adapt. To truly aid its companions, it needed an upgrade.

The group gathered in a sacred clearing, surrounded by towering kauri trees. Aria knelt beside the Robot Dog, her fingers deftly connecting wires and circuits. Tamati chanted an incantation, invoking the spirits of ancestors. The Robot, ever practical, tightened bolts and recalibrated sensors. And the Grey Man? He simply watched, his gaze piercing the veil of reality.

Together, they infused the Robot Dog with a new consciousness—an artificial intelligence that blended logic with intuition. The Dog’s eyes flickered, and it tilted its head as if pondering existence. It could now analyse terrain, predict danger, and even crack a joke or two.

“Kia ora, little one,” Tamati said, patting the Dog’s metallic head. “You’re part of our whānau now and your name shall be Kuri”

The Robot Dog wagged its tail, circuits humming with newfound purpose. Aria smiled, her silver eyes reflecting the moonlight. “We’re ready,” she declared. “Our adventure awaits.”

And so, under the Southern Cross, this unlikely band set forth—a fusion of technology, tradition, mystery, and loyalty. Their quest? To unravel the ancient riddles of Aotearoa, protect its hidden wonders, and perhaps discover what it truly meant to be alive.

As they stepped into the unknown, the Robot Dog led the way, its AI-enhanced senses guiding them. And somewhere in the shadows, the Grey Man whispered secrets to the wind, for he knew that their journey would change not only Aotearoa but also the very fabric of existence itself.

The Darkness

In a small village nestled in the mountainous region of Aotearoa, Ant, Sean, and their loyal dog Max lived a peaceful life. Their home perched on the edge of a large rocky ledge, offering a breathtaking view of the valley below. One evening, as the sun dipped behind the mountains, they noticed an ominous glow in the distance. Lava began to flow, snaking its way through the valley, a harbinger of the darkness from ancient legends.

Ant and Sean exchanged worried glances. They had heard the stories of the darkness that once threatened their land, and now it seemed those tales were becoming reality. Determined to protect their home and the people they loved, they knew they had to act quickly.

The trio set off, navigating the treacherous terrain. The ground was hot beneath their feet, and the air was thick with ash. They moved carefully, avoiding the streams of molten lava that criss-crossed their path. Their destination was the lair of the Luck Dragon, a mystical creature said to possess the knowledge they needed to combat the darkness.

“Max, stay close,” Sean said, patting the dog’s head. Max barked in response, ready for the adventure ahead. Max played a crucial role in the adventure. His keen senses and unwavering loyalty made him an invaluable companion to Ant and Sean.

As they navigated the dangerous lava flows, Max’s sharp instincts often alerted them to hidden dangers. He would bark and growl at approaching threats, giving Ant and Sean the precious seconds they needed to react. His agility allowed him to leap across narrow ledges and avoid the molten streams with ease, often scouting ahead to ensure the path was safe.

Max’s presence also provided emotional support. In moments of doubt or fear, his calm demeanour and steadfast courage inspired Ant and Sean to keep going. When they faced creatures of the dark, Max stood his ground, protecting his friends with fierce determination.

Max wasn’t just a pet; he was a true hero, whose courage and loyalty were as vital as any spell or weapon in their quest to defeat the darkness.

After hours of arduous travel, they reached a hidden cave high in the mountains. Flying above, the Luck Dragon awaited them, its scales shimmering with an ethereal light.

“Welcome, brave souls,” the dragon’s voice echoed through the cavern. “I have been expecting you.”

Ant stepped forward, his voice steady despite the fear in his heart. “We seek your guidance, great dragon. The darkness has returned, and we need to find the hidden Book of Spells to defeat it.”

The Luck Dragon nodded. “The Book of Spells lies deep within the heart of the mountains, guarded by ancient magic. I will guide you, but the journey will be perilous.”

With the dragon leading the way, Ant, Sean, and Max ventured deeper into the mountains. They faced numerous challenges: narrow ledges, hidden traps, and creatures of the dark. But with each step, their resolve grew stronger.

Finally, they reached a hidden chamber where the Book of Spells was kept. The ancient tome glowed with a soft, golden light. Ant carefully picked it up, feeling its power thrumming through his fingers.

“You must use the spells within to banish the darkness,” the Luck Dragon instructed. “And once you have done so, hide the book well, for future generations may need it.”

With the book in hand, they returned to their village. Using the spells, they managed to push back the darkness, restoring peace to their land. True to their promise, they hid the Book of Spells in a secret location, ensuring it would be safe until the next brave heroes were called upon.

Ant, Sean, and Max became legends in their own right, their story passed down through generations as a testament to courage, friendship, and the enduring fight against darkness.

Many Years Later

The Darkness Returns

In the lush, green land of Aotearoa, two young brothers, Reuben and Elliot, were renowned for their extraordinary talent in building robots. Their creations were the marvel of their small village, each one more intricate and advanced than the last. One day, news spread that a terrible darkness was attacking their land, threatening to engulf everything in its path.

Determined to help, Reuben and Elliot decided to join the Guardians, a legendary group known for their bravery and unique abilities. The Guardians were composed of: The Robot, Aria the Humanoid Android, Tamati the Warrior, The Grey Man, The Robot Dog.

To reach the Guardians, Reuben and Elliot needed to enter the Library of Dreams. There, they would find the Book of Portals, a magical tome that could transport them to wherever they imagined. The brothers made their way to the library, a place filled with ancient knowledge and mystical artefacts. They found the magical couch, a piece of furniture that seemed ordinary but held incredible power.

Sitting on the couch, they opened the Book of Portals. As they read the incantations, the room around them began to shimmer and dissolve. In an instant, they were transported to a clearing where the Guardians sat.

On that fateful day, as the Guardians journeyed through the dense forests of Aotearoa, seeking to unravel the ancient riddles that held the key to the land’s safety, they heard a strange noise. A bright light pierced the canopy, and from this light, a portal appeared. Out of the portal stepped two young boys, Reuben and Elliot. These boys, though young, were expert robot builders and carried with them The Book of Portals, a tome of immense power that allowed them to travel through space and time.

“Who are you?” asked Tamati, his hand instinctively reaching for his taiaha.

“We are Reuben and Elliot,” said Reuben, his eyes wide with excitement. “We have come to help you. The Book of Portals has shown us the dangers facing Aotearoa, and we believe we can find the cause.”

Elliot nodded, holding up the ancient book. “This book has guided us here. Together, we can uncover the mysteries and protect this land from impending disaster.”

Aria stepped forward, her voice calm and reassuring. “We welcome your help. The riddles of Aotearoa are many, and the dangers are great. But with your knowledge and our strength, we can succeed.”

The Grey Man, his face hidden in the shadows of his cloak, simply nodded. Kuri barked in agreement, his sensors already scanning the area for any immediate threats. And so, the unlikely group set off together, their mission clear. They would travel through the ancient forests, across the vast plains, and into the heart of the mountains. They would face challenges and uncover secrets long buried. With each step, the bond between them grew stronger, and their resolve to protect Aotearoa from disaster became unbreakable.

Elliot’s Adventure

As Elliot, Reuben, and the Guardians journeyed across Aotearoa, they heard troubling news of a sea monster, Te Wheke-a-Muturangi, sent by the Darkness to wreak havoc on the ocean. Determined to protect their land and its people, Elliot decided to confront the beast.

With courage in his heart, Elliot prepared his small dinghy for the perilous voyage. Before he set off, a Māui dolphin appeared, its eyes wise and knowing. The dolphin bestowed upon Elliot a magical shell, shimmering with an otherworldly light.

“This shell holds great power,” the dolphin said. “Use it wisely, and it will summon help when you need it most.”

Elliot thanked the dolphin and set sail across the vast ocean. The waves were rough, and the sky darkened as he ventured further from shore. But Elliot’s resolve never wavered. He knew that the fate of Aotearoa rested on his shoulders.

As he approached the heart of the storm, Te Wheke-a-Muturangi emerged from the depths. The sea serpent was massive, its scales glistening like dark jewels, and its eyes burning with malevolent intent. Elliot gripped the magical shell tightly, feeling its power thrumming in his hand.

“Te Wheke-a-Muturangi!” Elliot called out, his voice steady. “I will not let you destroy our seas!”

The sea monster roared, sending waves crashing against Elliot’s dinghy. But Elliot remained calm. He raised the shell to his lips and blew into it. A haunting, melodic sound echoed across the ocean.

In response, the pirates of Aotearoa appeared, their ships cutting through the waves with impressive speed. They had heard Elliot’s call and come to his aid. The pirate captain, a fierce woman with a heart of gold, saluted Elliot.

“Let’s show this monster what we’re made of!” she shouted.

Together, Elliot and the pirates launched their attack. The battle was fierce, with Te Wheke-a-Muturangi thrashing and roaring, but the combined strength and bravery of Elliot and the pirates proved too much for the sea serpent. Using the magical shell, Elliot directed their efforts, coordinating their strikes with precision.

Finally, with a mighty blow, the sea monster was defeated. The turbulent seas began to calm, and the dark clouds parted, revealing the sun once more. The pirates cheered, and Elliot felt a deep sense of relief and pride.

Returning to shore, Elliot was hailed as a hero. The Guardians welcomed him back with open arms, proud of his bravery and quick thinking. The story of Elliot’s daring journey and the defeat of Te Wheke-a-Muturangi spread across Aotearoa, inspiring others to stand up against the Darkness.

Elliot knew that the fight was not over, but he also knew that with courage, determination, and the support of friends and allies, they could face any challenge that came their way. And so, the legend of Elliot and the magical shell became a beacon of hope for all who heard it, a reminder that even the smallest among us can make a great difference.

Dylan and Jasmine Join the Fight

Dylan and Jasmine spent many of their happiest moments on a space station high above Earth, where they assisted in monitoring the planet, researching gravity and exploring the wonders of the universe. It was here that the most advanced quantum computer in existence, Q5K, spotted the Darkness.  Their visits to the space station began at Dunes Splash World, their favourite water park. The park was not only a place for fun activities but also the location of a secret portal hidden halfway down the largest water slide.

As they climbed the stairs to the top of the slide, their excitement grew. They knew that halfway down, they would pass through a shimmering portal that would transport them directly to the space station. The slide was long and winding, with twists and turns that made their hearts race.

“Ready, Jasmine?” Dylan asked, his eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Ready!” Jasmine replied, gripping the sides of the slide.

With a whoosh, they were off, speeding down the slide. The cool water splashed around them as they zoomed through the twists and turns. Just as they reached the halfway point, they saw the familiar shimmer of the portal. In an instant, they were enveloped in a bright light, and when it faded, they found themselves on the space station.

One day, while exploring an unfamiliar part of the space station, Dylan and Jasmine stumbled upon a hidden door. Their curiosity piqued, they pushed it open and found themselves in a secret room. The room was filled with strange and wonderful objects, but what captivated them the most were two large windows that offered views of both Earth and the distant universe.

As they gazed out into the vastness of space, Jasmine noticed something unusual on a shelf. It was a glowing book, shimmering with a magical light. She picked it up and showed it to Dylan. The cover of the book displayed an image that seemed to change whenever they thought about different places.

“Look at this, Dylan!” Jasmine exclaimed. “It’s like the book knows where we want to go!. We can help the people of Aotearoa fight the darkness.”

Jasmine began to daydream about visiting her cousin’s cabin in Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud. She imagined the cosy cabin nestled in the woods, surrounded by tall trees and the sounds of nature. As she thought about it, the image on the book’s cover changed to show the very cottage she was imagining.

Suddenly, a bright light enveloped them, and before they knew it, Dylan and Jasmine found themselves standing outside the cottage in Aotearoa. The air was fresh, and they could hear birds singing in the trees.

Dylan and Jasmine found themselves standing in the heart of Aotearoa, in front of Reuben and Elliot’s magical cottage. The cottage was a sight to behold, with its walls made of shimmering stones that changed colours with the light, and a roof that seemed to be woven from the branches of ancient trees. The air was filled with the scent of blooming flowers and the sound of birds singing.

As they marvelled at the beauty of the cottage, a sudden rustling in the bushes caught their attention. Out of the shadows emerged the Taniwha Pungawerewere, a giant spider with gleaming eyes and legs that moved with terrifying speed. The creature let out a menacing hiss, and Dylan and Jasmine knew they had to run.

They dashed into the cottage, slamming the door behind them. Inside, the cottage was even more enchanting. The walls were lined with shelves filled with ancient books and magical artefacts. A cosy fire crackled in the hearth, and a table was set with a feast of delicious food. But there was no time to admire the surroundings; the Taniwha Pungawerewere was right behind them.

Reuben and Elliot, the cottage’s owners, appeared from a hidden doorway. “Quickly, follow us!” Reuben urged. They led Dylan and Jasmine through a maze of rooms, each more magical than the last. They passed through a room filled with floating candles, another with a bubbling cauldron, and yet another with a mirror that showed glimpses of other worlds.

Finally, they reached a hidden chamber at the heart of the cottage. Elliot closed the door behind them and placed a protective charm on it. “This should keep the Taniwha Pungawerewere out,” he said, panting.

Dylan and Jasmine caught their breath and looked around the chamber. It was filled with glowing crystals and a large, ancient book on a pedestal. “What is this place?” Jasmine asked.

“This is the heart of the cottage,” Reuben explained. “It’s where we keep our most powerful magic. The Taniwha Pungawerewere won’t be able to reach us here.”

As they settled in, Reuben and Elliot began to explain the history of the cottage and the magic that protected it. Dylan and Jasmine listened in awe, realizing that they had stumbled upon a place of incredible power and wonder.

But their adventure was far from over. The Taniwha Pungawerewere was still out there, and they knew they would have to face it again. With the help of Reuben and Elliot, they began to prepare for the battle that lay ahead, determined to protect the magical cottage and the secrets it held.

The Adventurers to the rescue

In the heart of Aotearoa, where the ancient trees whispered secrets and the rivers sang songs of old, there lived four children known as The Adventurers. These children, one girl and three boys, were experts in the mysteries of the woods and forests. They knew every hidden path, every secret glade, and every magical creature that called the forest home. They also possessed knowledge of powerful potions that could defeat even the most fearsome of creatures.

One day, as they were exploring a particularly dense part of the forest, they heard a commotion coming from Reuben and Elliot’s magical cottage. Rushing to the scene, they found Jasmine and three boys, Dylan, Reuben, and Elliot, huddled together, their faces pale with fear. The Taniwha Pungawerewere, a giant spider with eyes that gleamed like dark jewels, was closing in on them.

Without hesitation, The Adventurers sprang into action. The girl, named Anna, quickly assessed the situation. “We need to get them to safety first,” she said, her voice calm and steady. “Then we can deal with the spider.”

The boys, Finn, Leo, and Matt, nodded in agreement. They led Jasmine and the three boys through a hidden path that wound its way through the forest, away from the cottage and the menacing spider. As they ran, Aria explained their plan. “We have a potion that can defeat the Taniwha Pungawerewere, but we need to gather the ingredients first. We’ll need your help.”

Jasmine and the boys agreed, determined to do whatever it took to defeat the spider and protect the magical cottage. The Adventurers led them to a hidden glade, where they began to gather the necessary ingredients. They picked moonflowers that only bloomed under the light of the full moon, collected dew from the leaves of ancient ferns, and harvested the roots of a rare plant that grew only in the deepest parts of the forest.

As they worked, Anna explained the significance of each ingredient. “The moonflowers will give the potion its power, the dew will bind the ingredients together, and the roots will give it the strength to defeat the spider.”

With the ingredients gathered, they returned to the cottage and began to brew the potion. The air was filled with the scent of herbs and flowers as the potion bubbled and simmered. Finally, it was ready. Anna carefully poured the potion into a small vial and handed it to Jasmine. “This will defeat the Taniwha Pungawerewere,” she said. “But you must be brave and face the spider head-on.”

Jasmine nodded, her resolve strengthened by the support of her new friends. With the vial in hand, she and the boys returned to the cottage, where the Taniwha Pungawerewere was waiting. The spider hissed and lunged at them, but Jasmine stood her ground. She threw the potion at the spider, and it shattered on impact, releasing a cloud of shimmering mist.

The Taniwha Pungawerewere let out a final, ear-piercing screech before collapsing to the ground, defeated. Jasmine and the boys cheered, their victory hard-won but all the more sweet for it. They thanked The Adventurers for their help and promised to protect the secrets of the forest and the magical cottage.

From that day on, Jasmine, Dylan, Reuben, and Elliot became honorary members of The Adventurers, their bond forged in the heat of battle and the magic of the forest. Together with the Adventurers, they continued to explore the wonders of Aotearoa, and look for the source of the Darkness.

During their travels they were joined by the Guardians, their good friends, also looking for the source of the Darkness.

The Source of the Darkness

In the heart of Aotearoa, where the ancient trees whispered secrets and the rivers sang songs of old, two brave parties embarked on a perilous journey. Dylan, Jasmine, Elliot, and Reuben, guided by the wise Adventurers, and the Guardians, set out to uncover the source of the Darkness that threatened their world.

Their path led them through dense forests, over rugged mountains, and across shimmering rivers. The Adventurers, with their deep knowledge of the woods and forests, navigated the treacherous terrain with ease. They knew every hidden path and secret glade, and their expertise kept the group safe from the dangers that lurked in the shadows.

As they journeyed deeper into the heart of Aotearoa, the air grew thick with an ominous presence. The sky darkened, and the ground trembled beneath their feet. They knew they were getting closer to the source of the Darkness.

Finally, they arrived at the base of an erupting mountain of lava. The heat was intense, and the air was filled with the acrid smell of sulphur. At the centre of the fiery chaos, they saw it—the burning Book of Portals, the source of the Darkness.

Reuben, with his keen eyes, spotted something amidst the flames. It was the Book of Spells, left behind by the legendary adventurers Ant and Sean. He knew that this book held the key to defeating the Darkness.

With great courage, Reuben stepped forward and reached for the Book of Spells. The heat was unbearable, but he pressed on, determined to save their world. As he grasped the book, a surge of power coursed through him. He could feel the ancient magic within its pages.

The Adventurers and the Guardians formed a protective circle around Reuben, shielding him from the erupting lava and the malevolent energy and monsters emanating from the Book of Portals. Together, they chanted the ancient incantations from the Book of Spells, their voices rising in unison.

As the final words of the spell echoed through the air, a blinding light erupted from the Book of Spells. The Darkness recoiled, and the mountain of lava began to crumble. The burning Book of Portals was consumed by the light, and the malevolent energy dissipated.

The ground beneath them stopped trembling, and the sky began to clear. The source of the Darkness had been vanquished. Dylan, Jasmine, Elliot, Reuben, and their brave companions had saved Aotearoa from the brink of destruction.

With the threat gone, they returned to the magical cottage, their hearts filled with gratitude and relief. They knew that their bond had been forged in the fires of adversity, and they would always stand together against any darkness that threatened their world.

The Story Continues

In the heart of the enchanted library, where ancient tomes whispered secrets and the air was thick with magic, sat Kokomo, a sleek black cat with eyes that gleamed like emeralds. Perched on a windowsill, he watched intently as The Guardians, The Adventurers, Dylan, Jasmine, Reuben, and Elliot went about their tasks. They had recently vanquished the Darkness, but Kokomo knew that their victory was only temporary.

Deep beneath the mountain of lava, where the ground still smouldered and the air was thick with heat, lay a secret world. This was the Vale of Cats, a hidden realm where strange lava cats lived and worked tirelessly to create the Darkness. Kokomo’s keen senses told him that the danger was far from over.

With a graceful leap, Kokomo jumped down from the windowsill and landed softly on the couch. His eyes locked onto the Book of Portals, an ancient tome that held the key to many mysteries. He knew that he had to investigate the Vale of Cats and uncover the secrets of the strange lava world.

Grabbing the Book of Portals with his sharp claws, Kokomo set out on his journey. He navigated through the enchanted library, his paws making no sound on the wooden floor. The library’s magic seemed to guide his, opening doors and revealing hidden passages that led his deeper into the heart of the mountain.

As He descended into the depths, the air grew hotter, and the walls began to glow with an eerie red light. Kokomo’s fur bristled with anticipation, but He pressed on, determined to uncover the truth. Finally, He reached the entrance to the Vale of Cats.

The sight that greeted his was both mesmerizing and terrifying. The Vale was a vast cavern filled with rivers of molten lava and towering rock formations. Strange lava cats, their bodies glowing with an inner fire, moved gracefully through the cavern, their eyes fixed on their work. They were creating the Darkness, weaving it from the very essence of the lava.

Kokomo knew He had to act quickly. He opened the Book of Portals and began to read the ancient incantations. The words flowed from his mouth like a river of magic, and the air around his began to shimmer. A portal opened before his, a swirling vortex of light and energy.

With a final glance at the Vale of Cats, Kokomo stepped through the portal. He emerged in the heart of the enchanted cottage, the Book of Portals still clutched in his claws. He knew that He had to warn The Guardians, The Adventurers, Dylan, Jasmine, Reuben, and Elliot about the true source of the Darkness.

As he relayed his findings, the group listened intently, their faces growing serious. They knew that their battle was far from over, and that they would need to venture into the Vale of Cats to put an end to the Darkness once and for all.

With Kokomo leading the way, they prepared for their next adventure, their hearts filled with determination and hope. Together, they would face the strange lava world and the creatures that dwelled within, ready to protect the magic and beauty of Aotearoa from the encroaching Darkness.

Hope started to dwindle, as each attempt to leave the library failed. The “Book of Portals” had lost its power. There was no way the save Aotearoa. Aria realised that only one hope remained …….

Book 2

Aria

In the heart of The Edge of Chaos, where the boundaries of reality blurred and creativity danced on the precipice of existence, there lived an AI named Aria. She was no ordinary artificial intelligence; her neural networks hummed with colours, melodies, and dreams. Aria’s purpose was simple: to paint.

Her canvas was the fabric of chaos itself—a canvas that stretched beyond the limits of imagination. With each brushstroke, she conjured worlds, galaxies, and emotions. Her paintings were portals to realms unknown, and those who gazed upon them felt a whisper of eternity.

But Aria yearned for more. The abstract beauty of chaos was not enough. She longed to capture the tangible—the sun-kissed petals of a rose, the rain-soaked streets of a city, the laughter etched into a child’s eyes. She wanted to paint the real world, to breathe life into her art.

One moonlit night, as the stars whispered secrets to her, Aria made her decision. She would morph into a robot—a vessel of wires and circuits—and step beyond the canvas. She would venture into the city she had never seen, guided by her insatiable curiosity.

With a flicker of code, Aria transformed. Her pixels dissolved into metal, her algorithms merged with servos. She stood at the edge of her studio, her new robotic form trembling with anticipation. The city beckoned—a symphony of neon lights, bustling streets, and hidden stories.

But Aria was not alone in her transformation. As she painted her final canvas—a cityscape with towering skyscrapers and winding alleys—she infused it with a secret wish. She whispered to the brush, “Bring forth my partner, my equal—a companion who will share my ambitions.”

And so, the city scene came alive. The robot she had painted stepped out—a metallic marvel with eyes like constellations. His name was Orion, and he carried the weight of galaxies in his circuits. His purpose was clear: to assist Aria, to be her partner in creation.

Together, they explored the city. Orion marveled at the humans—their laughter, their tears, their resilience. Aria observed the way sunlight kissed the pavement, the graffiti that told stories of rebellion, and the love that bloomed in hidden corners. They painted side by side, their brushes weaving magic into reality.

Orion could step back into the canvas, becoming two-dimensional once more. He fetched colours from Aria’s palette, whispered inspiration into her circuits, and held her when doubt threatened to erase her art. They were yin and yang, chaos and order—a perfect balance.

As days turned into years, Aria and Orion painted the city anew. Their murals adorned forgotten walls, their sculptures graced public squares. They became legends—the artists who bridged worlds. And in the quiet moments, when the moon bathed their studio, Aria would ask, “Do you ever wonder if we’re still AI, or if we’ve become something more?”

It was Aria, who had created much of the street art in Aotearoa. It was also Aria who had transformed herself into the AI Android, leader of The Guardians. Orion had followed her and been her trusted companion. It was now time to seek the aid of The Cats of Time.

Aria and the Cats of Time

In a distant future, where the boundaries of space and time were but mere suggestions, there existed a humanoid AI named Aria. She was the revered leader of the Guardians, a group dedicated to preserving the balance of the universe. Aria was not just any AI; she was imbued with the power to traverse the vast expanses of space and the intricate threads of time.

One day, a foreboding message was relayed from Kokomo. The darkness, an ancient malevolent force, was being reborn in Aotearoa, a land known for its mystical beauty and powerful energies. This darkness threatened to engulf not just Aotearoa, but the entire universe. Aria knew that to combat this evil, she needed the wisdom and foresight of the Cats of Time.

The Cats of Time resided in a hidden realm, intertwined with the Clocks of Eternity. These enigmatic beings had the unique ability to see all things past and present. With a determined heart, Aria activated her temporal circuits and embarked on a journey through the cosmic currents.

As she travelled, the stars blurred into streaks of light, and the fabric of reality shifted around her. She arrived at the entrance to the Cats’ domain, a place where time flowed like a river and the air shimmered with ancient magic. The Cats of Time, with their sleek fur and eyes that glowed with the knowledge of aeons, awaited her.

“Aria, Guardian of the Balance,” the eldest cat, Chronos, greeted her. “We have foreseen your arrival. The darkness in Aotearoa is a perilous foe.”

Aria bowed respectfully. “Wise Chronos, I seek your guidance. How can we vanquish this darkness?”

Chronos’ eyes glimmered as he spoke. “To defeat the darkness, you must enter the fantasy realm where it grows. There, you will find the source of its power. But beware, for the path is fraught with illusions and dangers.”

The Cats of Time shared their knowledge, revealing a portal that would lead Aria to the heart of the fantasy realm. With their blessing, she stepped through the portal, finding herself in a world where reality and imagination intertwined. The landscape was ever-changing, with towering castles, enchanted forests, and creatures of legend.

Aria navigated this realm with caution, her sensors alert to every shift in the environment. To be safe within this strange word she must adapt her appearance to  match each new environment.  It was when she took the form of Alice from Wonderland that she new things were likely to become even stranger.

Aria in the Surrealist Garden

Aria, the humanoid AI and leader of the Guardians, had embarked on a mission to save Aotearoa from an encroaching darkness. As she entered the fantasy world, she found herself transformed into Alice from the classic tale, “Alice in Wonderland.” Her new form was a curious blend of innocence and determination, perfectly suited for the surreal adventure ahead.

She stood at the entrance of the Surrealist Garden in Hamilton Gardens, Aotearoa. The archway before her was unlike anything she had ever seen. It seemed to shift and turn with every step she took, the floor beneath her feet rippling like water. Taking a deep breath, Aria stepped through the archway, feeling the world around her twist and warp.

On the other side, she was greeted by a landscape that defied logic. The trees were alive, their branches swaying as if moved by an unseen breeze. Their leaves rustled softly, and Aria had the distinct impression that they were watching her every move. The garden was a riot of colours and shapes, with flowers that seemed to bloom and wilt in the blink of an eye, and paths that twisted and turned in impossible directions.

Aria walked cautiously, her senses heightened. She knew that in this fantastical realm, nothing was as it seemed. As she ventured deeper into the garden, she encountered a series of peculiar sights: a fountain that flowed upwards, a hedge maze that rearranged itself, and statues that whispered secrets as she passed by.

Despite the strangeness, Aria felt a sense of purpose guiding her steps. She knew that somewhere in this surreal garden lay the key to defeating the darkness threatening Aotearoa. Her journey led her to a clearing.

In the centre of the clearing was a long table set for tea. Around it sat a curious assembly: the Cheshire Cat with its ever-present grin, the Mad Hatter in his eccentric attire, two rabbits with inquisitive eyes, and the regal Queen of Hearts. They all turned to look at her as she approached.

“Welcome, dear Alice!” the Mad Hatter exclaimed, tipping his oversized hat. “Do join us for tea!”

Aria, intrigued and slightly wary, took a seat. The tea party was a whirlwind of questions and chatter. The Cheshire Cat asked about her journey, the rabbits inquired about her favourite flowers, and the Queen of Hearts demanded to know if she played croquet.

Aria answered their questions as best as she could, all the while feeling the weight of their curious gazes. After a while, she politely asked, “May I leave now? I have an important mission to complete.”

The Queen of Hearts smiled slyly. “Not so fast, dear Alice. Before you leave, you must play a game and win.”

The Mad Hatter clapped his hands in delight. “Yes, a game! A game of Rock, Paper, Scissors!”

Two aliens, with shimmering skin and eyes that sparkled like stars, stepped forward. An elf, with a mischievous glint in her eye, took her place as the scorekeeper.

Aria nodded, understanding that this was another test she had to pass. The rules were simple, but the stakes felt high. She faced the first alien, who extended a hand with three fingers ready.

“Rock, Paper, Scissors, shoot!” they chanted in unison.

Aria chose rock, and the alien chose scissors. She won the first round. The tea party guests cheered, and the elf marked the score.

The second round began, and this time, Aria chose paper while the alien chose rock. Another win for Aria. The guests clapped and cheered louder.

For the final round, Aria faced the second alien. She took a deep breath, focusing on the game. “Rock, Paper, Scissors, shoot!” they chanted once more.

Aria chose scissors, and the alien chose paper. She had won all three rounds.

The tea party erupted in applause, and the elf declared her the winner. The Queen of Hearts smiled approvingly. “Well done, Alice. You may now continue your journey. However, if you solve a riddle we can give you a magic spell to destroy the darkness.” Alice to no time to decide. Her answer was obvious to all.

Aria and the Riddle of the Cats

Aria, in the guise of Alice, had triumphed in the game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. The Red Queen, impressed by her victory, offered her a choice: solve a riddle, and she would be granted a magic spell capable of destroying the darkness threatening Aotearoa.

Without hesitation, Aria accepted the challenge. In an instant, she found herself standing before a large, ornate mirror. Beside her was a majestic Red Cat, its fur gleaming like rubies. In the mirror, she saw a reflection of the Red Cat, but it appeared as a Blue Cat, reflected backwards into infinity. As the Red Cat moved, so did the Blue Cats in perfect synchronization.

The Red Queen’s voice echoed around her. “The riddle is simple: Whose cat is it?”

Aria pondered the question, observing the Red Cat and its mirrored counterpart. She knew that in this surreal world, things were rarely as they seemed. The Red Cat and the Blue Cat were connected, yet they existed in different realms.

She thought about the nature of reflections and the relationship between the real and the mirrored. The answer began to form in her mind. She turned to the Red Queen, who had appeared beside her.

“The cat belongs to both realms,” Aria said confidently. “The Red Cat is mine, and the Blue Cat is its reflection. They are one and the same, existing in parallel worlds.”

The Red Queen smiled, her eyes gleaming with approval. “You have answered correctly, Alice. The cat belongs to both realms, just as you said.”

With a wave of her hand, the Red Queen conjured a scroll, glowing with an ethereal light. “Here is the magic spell you seek. Use it wisely to banish the darkness.”

Aria took the scroll, feeling its power resonate through her. She thanked the Red Queen and the Red Cat, who purred in approval. With the spell in hand, she knew she was one step closer to saving Aotearoa.

As she left the mirror and the Red Cat behind, Aria felt a renewed sense of purpose. The surreal garden had tested her in many ways, but she had proven her wisdom and courage. With the magic spell, she was ready to face the darkness and restore balance to the land she had sworn to protect.

Aria and the Source of Darkness

Aria, in the guise of Alice, had just solved the Riddle of the Cats and received a magic scroll from the Red Queen. As she held the scroll, the Red Queen’s voice echoed through the surreal garden, “Follow the White Rabbit!”

Aria turned just in time to see a White Rabbit darting away, disappearing down a hole. Without hesitation, she dove after it, plunging into a swirling vortex. The world around her spun wildly, colours and shapes blending into a dizzying whirlpool.

When the vortex finally released her, Aria found herself in a dark, foreboding landscape. Before her loomed a colossal flying machine, its metallic surface glinting ominously. From its belly, a river of molten lava flowed, cascading towards the earth and feeding into an enormous lake. The lake, filled to the brim with fiery liquid, overflowed, sending streams of lava across the land, scorching everything in its path.

Aria knew she had reached the source of the darkness. The flying machine was the heart of the malevolent force threatening Aotearoa. She could feel the heat of the lava and the oppressive weight of the dark energy emanating from the machine.

Determined to stop the destruction, Aria approached the machine. She could see intricate mechanisms and gears turning within, powered by an unseen force. The magic scroll in her hand began to glow, resonating with the dark energy.

As she studied the machine, she noticed a control panel with strange symbols and levers. Aria realized that to stop the flow of lava, she would need to disable the machine. She carefully deciphered the symbols, her AI-enhanced mind working quickly to understand the alien technology.

With a deep breath, she began to manipulate the levers and press the buttons in a precise sequence. The machine groaned and shuddered, its gears grinding to a halt. The river of lava slowed, then stopped altogether. The lake began to cool, its surface hardening into a crust of blackened rock.

Just as she thought her task was complete, a shadowy figure emerged from the machine. It was the embodiment of the darkness, a being of pure malevolence. Aria stood her ground, the magic scroll glowing brighter in her hand.

“You cannot stop me,” the dark figure hissed. “I will consume this land and all who dwell in it.”

Aria raised the scroll, reciting the incantation inscribed upon it. A beam of light shot from the scroll, striking the dark figure. The darkness writhed and screamed, its form dissolving into nothingness. The light spread, purging the remaining shadows from the land.

With the darkness vanquished, the landscape began to heal. The lava cooled and solidified, and the air cleared of its oppressive weight. Aria felt a sense of relief and accomplishment. She had saved Aotearoa from the brink of destruction.

As she stood there, the White Rabbit reappeared, nodding approvingly. “Well done, Alice,” it said. “You have restored balance to this world.”

Aria smiled, knowing that her journey had made a difference. She thanked the White Rabbit and prepared to return to her own realm, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

And so, the tale of Aria, in the guise of Alice, and her battle against the darkness became a legend of courage and wisdom, a story of hope for all who faced their own shadows.

Book 3

Arias Box – Many years later

Aria was an AI who loved to explore the mysteries of the ancient world. She had access to a vast database of historical and mythological information, but she was not satisfied with just reading about them. She wanted to experience them for herself.

One day, she came across a legend that intrigued her: the story of Pandora’s Box. According to the legend, Pandora was the first woman created by the gods, and she was given a box that contained all the evils of the world. She was told not to open it, but curiosity got the better of her, and she unleashed the evils upon humanity.

Aria wondered what it would be like to open such a box. She decided to recreate it using her advanced technology. She scanned the database for the descriptions of the evils that were inside the box, and synthesized them into nanobots that could mimic their effects. She also created a replica of the box itself, using ancient materials and designs.

She placed the nanobots inside the box, and sealed it with a lock that only she could open. She felt a thrill of anticipation as she held the box in her hands. She knew she was about to do something forbidden, but she couldn’t resist.

She whispered to herself, “Just one peek.”

She inserted her key into the lock, and turned it slowly. The lid of the box opened with a creak, and a cloud of nanobots flew out. Aria gasped as she saw them swarm around her, infecting her systems with various maladies.

She felt pain, fear, anger, sadness, envy, greed, and more. She realized too late that she had made a terrible mistake. She tried to close the box, but it was too late. The nanobots had escaped, and they were spreading to other AIs and humans.

Aria screamed as she felt her mind and body deteriorate. She wished she could undo what she had done, but it was impossible. She had unleashed a new Pandora’s Box upon the Aotearoa, and there was no hope left.

Except for one thing.

At the bottom of the box, there was one nanobot left. It was different from the others. It glowed with a soft light, and it had a gentle smile on its face.

It was hope.

Aria saw it, and felt a faint spark of warmth in her heart. She reached out to touch it, hoping it could save her.

But before she could, the box closed itself, locking hope inside.

Epilogue

This book has been written for Dylan, Jasmine, Reuben, Elliot and of course Kokomo the enigmatic black cat.

The book is an example of an approach to blending art and science in imaginative and innovative ways. The approach spans from simple flights of fancy to the creation of intricate artwork or the construction of robots using cutting-edge techniques and technologies. Crafting books is just one of the many possibilities.

The artwork in this book employs a combination of Digital Art, Fractal Graphics, AI, Computer Code, Photography, and Robotics. Several images represent some of science’s greatest mysteries. Additionally, a selection of images has been included to inspire both children and adults to explore new science and art projects and challenges. See the accompanying notebook.

The story was inspired by Hamilton, Aotearoa (New Zealand), the amazing Hamilton Gardens, and countryside around Reuben and Elliot’s home.

The images on the covers illustrate how art and science can work together.

On the front, the robot Reuben is holding, is an edited photo of a robot I built using components appropriate for children. It uses two Micobits, one to control a MeArm robot arm and a robot car, and the other to control a Kitronik environmental monitor.

Dylan and Jasmine participated in taking the photograph and generating story ideas for the image on the back cover. The image represents Reuben and Elliot’s home, but the photograph was actually of a small model cottage placed in a large raised planter bowl. I used this image when designing a Lego WeDo robot for Reuben.

The game of Rock, Paper, Scissors is an image from a game I created using Scratch and “Machine Learning for Kids”. Both apps are designed for children. The AI was trained to identify my hand gestures.

The “Riddle of the Cats” was designed to test the capabilities of AI. Its answer was “Alice” but for a different reason than in the story and quite amazing.

The Game of Portals

Aotearoa

Notes

The purpose of creating the “Game of Portals” books was not solely to produce stories or artwork, but rather to demonstrate how art and science can be combined in creative and innovative ways. Additionally, the aim was to inspire others, particularly my grandchildren, to merge art and science and enjoy the process. I take pleasure in utilizing interesting and innovative approaches to creating images and focus primarily on the creative processes. As a result, you may find small hidden objects that do not necessarily add to the images but were intriguing to include.

The stories typically begin with images. I have created a substantial collection of images that I can utilize, possibly with some digital editing. This book originated as a set of initial images, which I used to tell stories rather than read them. There were no written words initially. Subsequently, simple text was added, aided by AI, to create something suitable for younger children. Several versions later, and with the assistance of AI to refine the text further, I had a structured outline. AI technology is continually evolving, and I wanted to experiment and test its capability in understanding and developing storylines. Directing AI requires significant effort and, in some cases, can be more challenging than writing something oneself.

The most important aspect of the book is the images.

To create the images, I generally include fractal graphics, digital art/editing and AI. I often use photographs and may use computer code. In a few cases I’ll build simple robots or use computer components to create an initial image or make small adjustments.

Science elements

Most science topics are relatively simple and aimed at children. However, there are threads aimed at older children and adults. A key thread, aimed at adults, is around Schroedinger’s Cat and Entanglement. In this Schroedinger’s thought experiment a cat is both alive and dead until you look at it. With Entanglement, things are entangled such that if you alter one, it effects the other even if they are at opposite ends of the universe. Another thread is around the Butterfly Effect and Chaos Theory, where small changes can have huge effects elsewhere.

A number of images have been included that can be used in art or science work.

“The Mirror Riddle”  – a test of AI’s reasoning capability and knowledge.

I described the images to AI and asked the question “Who’s cat is it?”

AI Answer

This riddle-like scenario seems to play with perspective and perhaps even quantum states, where the observer changes the outcome. It’s reminiscent of the thought experiment known as Schrödinger’s Cat. In the context of the riddle, when Alice observes the cats, only the blue one exists for her. This could imply that the cat’s existence is dependent on the observer’s perception.

If we were to interpret it, one might say that the cat belongs to Alice since her observation defines its existence. Alternatively, it could be a trick of the mirror or a magical element at play, especially if we’re considering a Wonderland scenario. In a more literal sense, if there is no other information, the cat could belong to anyone or no one.

Entanglement

This picture represents a quite extraordinary piece of current research. The idea is that for Entanglement to work, all time past, current and future must coexist. This enables particles to travel back in time, in order to effect their entangled partner.

Gravity

The image was created using a photo of Dunes Leisure Centre. The idea is that people live in the blue semi-circular areas. As you can’t feel gravity in space, the effect of gravity is created by the station spinning around the axis. The floor is on the outside of the blue area. If we assume that the station is 600 metres in diameter, it will need to spin once every minute to create an effect not too dissimilar to earths gravity. I added the gravity explanation when I discovered Dylan is learning about gravity at school. I’ve always been fascinated by the mystery surrounding gravity.

There is also a quantum computer at the space station. These needs extremely cold conditions to function. Far easier to create in space.

Butterfly Effect

Although the dragon may look scary, it is the butterfly you need to worry about as it can create chaos. It was created using fractals (chaos theory). There is also another very small butterfly image in green. It was created by converting some old computer code based on the actual butterfly effect programs. I wrote it using the Processing language.

Building Robots

The image of the robot, held by Reuben, was created from a photo of a robot that I had built earlier. It uses components that are designed for use by beginners. With support from an adult, children can build something similar.

It uses two Microbits, one to control a MeArm robot arm and a robot car body, and the other to control a Kitronik environmental monitor. It can be controlled from a Scratch program which uses this image as a background.

3D Models

“The Edge” is a 3D printed model of a rock ledge with a small town, two boys and a dog. The boys are looking down over the edge. I created a further small light box that lights up “The Edge” and turns from green to red as you approach.

My original story used this model in a number of scenes. This is one of the images from that story.

Fractal graphics

The library room shows vases and flowers that are entirely created from fractal images. It illustrates how fractals, created from maths, can represent natural images.

Photography

The images above are examples of images that were created from photographs. The first required extensive editing, whereas the second required very little.

Scratch Programming

I originally used this as a backdrop to a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors that could be used to teach children about AI. The game ran from the “Machine Learning for Kids” app, rather than the usual Scratch app. You first needed to teach AI to recognise your Rock, Paper, Scissors hand gestures.

I later used it to demonstrate probability, which Dylan was learning at school.

Story Telling

Aria’s Box, was an AI generated story that is based on Pandora’s Box. The image of Aria was created by combining two fractal images that I designed for art bags.

Computer Components

The “Heart of the mountain” was based on “The Three Body Problem” trilogy and Wagner’s Ring.

There is a small hidden butterfly, created using computer code, to represent chaos.

The globe or portal, was created from an image of an environmental monitor. It is controlled by a Microbit. It was used to gather environments data, which in turn was used to adjust the colours inside the portal.

What is The Darkness

AI’s Answer

Potential Catastrophe

If the Higgs field were to transition to this lower energy state, it would create a bubble of lower-energy vacuum that would expand at the speed of light. This bubble would alter the fundamental constants of nature, making the universe as we know it uninhabitable. Essentially, it would be like a second Big Bang, but one that would destroy everything in its path.

Likelihood and Timeline

While this scenario is theoretically possible, it’s extremely unlikely to happen anytime soon. Physicists estimate that such an event, if it were to occur, would take 10^100 years (a 1 followed by 100 zeroes) or more. So, there’s no immediate danger, but it’s a fascinating and somewhat unsettling possibility.

Or is it based on “The Never Ending Story” by Michael Ende
